Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is the key to precision medicine in oncology and delivers several benefits across the patient care pathway, from providing patients with a tailored therapeutic strategy, increasing efficiency in healthcare systems delivery of care, resulting in potential cost savings and benefits to future patients. Despite the significant clinical and economic benefits that NGS could deliver, there are barriers that are impeding the broader uptake of NGS in clinical practice. The panel discussion will cover the different barriers preventing the uptake of NGS, including a lack of prioritization in healthcare decision-making, the regulatory and value assessment process and reimbursement and funding challenges. All of these are exacerbated by a lack of understanding and awareness by stakeholders. The panelists will discuss how to fast-track policy solutions that could address the barriers preventing patient access to NGS and identify the ones that should be prioritized.
