En 2019, un nuevo coronavirus zoonótico nos recordó que la salud ambiental, animal y humana están estrechamente conectadas, y el COVID-19 marcó un hito imborrable en la historia de la humanidad. El 20 de enero de 2022, dos años después del inicio de la pandemia del COVID-19, la Universidad de Las Américas de Ecuador presentó el libro “La Enfermedad del Coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) y el Virus SARS-CoV-2”. El libro, publicado por UDLA Ediciones y editado por Esteban Ortiz-Prado, director del grupo de investigación One Health de la UDLA, es un esfuerzo extraordinario que contó con la colaboración de 70 autores de Ecuador, España, México y Estados Unidos. En sus 770 páginas, el libro presenta una visión multidisciplinaria de la pandemia, su origen y sus implicaciones médicas y sociales.
La obra se divide en tres secciones y 48 capítulos. La primera sección describe brevemente la historia de las pandemias, los aspectos biológicos y moleculares del virus SARS-CoV-2, su fisiopatología y epidemiología. Desde un enfoque multidisciplinario, la segunda sección describe los efectos del SARS-CoV-2 en el cuerpo humano. Finalmente, una tercera sección describe las diferentes implicaciones del SARS-CoV-2 en la sociedad y el medio ambiente. In Ecuador, the University of Las Americas -UDLA launched the book "Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) and the SARS-CoV-2 Virus".
In 2019, a new zoonotic coronavirus reminded us that environmental, animal and human health are closely connected, and COVID-19 marked an indelible milestone in the history of humanity. On January 20, 2022, more than two years after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Las Americas in Quito, Ecuador, presented the book "The Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) and the SARS-CoV-2 Virus". The book, published by UDLA Ediciones, and edited by Esteban Ortiz-Prado, director of the One Health research group at UDLA, is an extraordinary effort that included the collaboration of 70 authors from Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, and the United States. In its 770 pages, the book presents a multidisciplinary view of the pandemic, its origin, and its medical and social implications.
The work is divided into three sections and 48 chapters. The first section briefly describes the history of pandemics, the biological and molecular aspects of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, its pathophysiology, and epidemiology. From a multidisciplinary approach, the second section describes the effects of SARS-CoV-2 on the human body.
