Cost-of/Burden-of-Illness Studies: Steps Backward?
Abstract
I have expected, and often found, significant progress over the years in the HEOR discipline. This is not always the case. Two recently published articles relating to cost-of-illness (COI) studies – one a COI per se (head and neck cancer)1 and the other a systematic review of COIs (in atrial fibrillation)2 suggest that some advancements in HEOR are not routinely reflected in published papers. The authors of these two articles did not address long-standing controversies around the value of such studies.
