20th Anniversary Issue Focuses on “Value” in Healthcare
Lawrenceville, NJ, USA—May 20, 2019—Value in
Health, the
official journal of ISPOR—the
professional society for health economics and outcomes research (HEOR),
announced today the publication of a special 20th anniversary issue that
reflects on how “value” has been defined, measured, and debated in the journal
for the past two decades. To mark the occasion, the Editors commissioned
articles that dealt with topics that have been widely discussed in the journal over
the past 20 years, but for which there is an exciting future agenda in the
field of HEOR.
The
papers in this special issue are organized in three distinct categories:
- Notions of “Value” in Healthcare. This section includes papers that discuss the
clinical, economic, and health-related quality-of-life components, as well as
the role of patient-reported outcomes, as one of the central notions of
defining and assessing value.
- Decision-Analytic Modeling. Perhaps the journal’s most significant
contribution to the literature has been in the development of methodological
standards in decision-analytic modeling. Papers in this section discuss the
role of modern software tools, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to
analyze large, real-world data sets to increase efficiency in the provision of
healthcare.
- HEOR in the Broader Context of HTA and
Comparative-Effectiveness Research.
Recognizing the methodological and practical challenges of using HEOR in
decisions regarding the reimbursement of health technologies, the papers in
this section examine the key differences that influence the use of health
technology assessment (HTA) and how it is practiced around the world.
The
20th anniversary issue of Value in Health
debuts a bold new look for the publication that aligns with the Society’s new
branding. The new journal design reflects a more contemporary look that features
a new cover, new page layout, and the use of color to improve overall
readability.
Michael
F. Drummond, MCom, DPhil (Centre for Health Economics, University of York,
York, England, UK) and C. Daniel Mullins, PhD (Pharmaceutical Health Services
Research Department, University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Baltimore,
Maryland, USA) have served as Editors-in-Chief of Value in Health since 2011. Under their leadership and editorial
direction, the journal has matured into a top-ranked, high-impact journal in
the field.
“The
science of HEOR has certainly evolved over the past two decades and ISPOR has
been a major driver of some of that scientific advancement,” said Drummond. “As
the current Editors-in-Chief, we are proud of what Value in Health has achieved over the past 20 years, said Drummond.
“We
see our role as maintaining the high standards that the journal has already established
and improving on them,” said Mullins. “A key part of this task is to anticipate
the changes we are likely to see in the field of HEOR as the environment for
healthcare products and services changes in the future. If we can achieve that,
Value in Health will continue to
deliver “value” to its readers and its authors well into the future.”
