HEOR Awards Program Designed to Foster and Recognize Excellence and Outstanding Achievement in the Field
New Orleans, LA, USA—May 20, 2019—ISPOR—the professional society
for health economics and outcomes research (HEOR)—honored global leaders in the
field at its Annual Awards Banquet last night. The event was held at the
Society’s ISPOR
2019
annual conference on May 19, 2019 in New Orleans, LA, USA.
The ISPOR HEOR Awards Program grants scientific and
service awards that are designed to foster and recognize excellence and
outstanding achievement in the field of HEOR. The Society also bestows lifetime
achievement and leadership awards to those who advance the field and who
selflessly serve the Society.
Awards bestowed at the
event included:
Avedis Donabedian Outcomes Research Lifetime Achievement
Award
Marc L. Berger, MD was presented the 2019 Avedis
Donabedian Outcomes Research Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding,
life-long achievement in improving health outcomes. Dr Berger is a semiretired,
part-time consultant, New York, NY, USA. Until July 2017, he was vice
president, real-world data and analytics at Pfizer, Inc and has held a number
of senior-level positions in industry. This award was established in honor of
the late Avedis Donabedian, MD, MPH who has been called the “father of outcomes
research.”
Marilyn Dix Smith Leadership Award
Josephine Mauskopf, PhD was presented the 2019 Marilyn
Dix Smith Leadership Award for her consistent, broad, and meaningful direction
to the Society in a leadership role. Dr Mauskopf is vice president of health
economics at RTI Health Solutions, Research Triangle Park, NC, USA. She has
more than 30 years of experience both as a consultant and within the
pharmaceutical industry designing and implementing health economic research
strategies for prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, psychiatric
illness, and neurologic diseases. This award is named to honor the Society’s
Founding Executive Director, Marilyn Dix Smith, RPh, PhD, whose leadership and
vision developed ISPOR into the leading global Society in the field.
Bernie J. O’Brien New Investigator Award
Zirui Song, MD, PhD was presented the 2019 Bernie
J. O’Brien New Investigator Award for his exceptional promise as a new investigator based on his body of
technical and scholarly work in the field. Dr Song is an assistant professor of
healthcare policy and medicine at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts
General Hospital. He is a physician and health economist whose work focuses on
strategies to improve the value of healthcare spending. This award was
established in 2004 to honor the long-standing commitment of Bernie J. O’Brien,
PhD to training and mentoring new scientists in the field of health economics
and outcomes research.

ISPOR Service Awards were
also presented to recognize members who have significantly contributed to the
vision and mission of the Society, in addition to Student Network Awards to
acknowledge Student Network chapters and presidents.
