Value in Health Themed Section Offers Updated Global Perspective

Lawrenceville, NJ, USA—January 21, 2018—Value in Health, the official journal of ISPOR—the professional society for health economics and outcomes research, announced today the publication of a series of papers that reflect the current research focus and interests of the EuroQol Group. The themed section, “The Evolution of the EuroQol Group,” was published in the January issue of Value in Health. The section guest editor, Andrew Lloyd, DPhil, Acaster Lloyd Consulting, Ltd, London, UK, curated this collection of papers and wrote an introductory editorial that puts this series of articles in context. Each of the articles in the themed section addresses one or more aspects of EQ-5D, a standardized instrument for measuring health status first introduced in 1990 by the EuroQol Group. The themed section includes the following articles:
  1. Overview, Update and Lessons Learned From the International EQ-5D-5L Valuation Work: Version 2 of the EQ-5D-5L Valuation Protocol by Elly Stolk, Kristina Ludwig, Kim Rand, Ben van Hout, and Juan Manuel Ramos-Goñi
  1. EQ-5D-Y as a Health-Related Quality of Life Instrument for Children and Adolescents: The Instrument’s Characteristics, Development, Current Use and Challenges of Developing Its Value Set by Simone Kreimeier, and Wolfgang Greiner
  1. The Effect of Health State Sampling Methods on Model Predictions of EQ-5D-5L Values: Small Designs Can Suffice by Zhihao Yang, Nan Luo, Gouke Bonsel, Jan Busschbach, and Elly Stolk
  1. Cost-Utility Analysis Using EQ-5D-5L Data: Does How the Utilities Are Derived Matter? by Fan Yang, Nancy Devlin, and Nan Luo
  1. Selecting Bolt-On Dimensions for the EQ-5D: Examining Their Contribution to Health-Related Quality of Life, by Aureliano Finch, John E. Brazier, and Clara Mukuria
  1. Future Directions in Valuing Benefits for Estimating QALYs: Is Time Up for the EQ-5D? by John E. Brazier, Donna Rowen, Andrew Lloyd, and Milad Karimi
As the papers in this themed section reveal, striking a balance between innovative methods and providing a standardized approach to health valuation is a constant challenge. Standardized formats can facilitate data collection and ensure data quality, all in an effort toward better practices in health valuation around the world, particularly by researchers in countries with limited experience in the field. “While these papers represent a snapshot of some of the current initiatives undertaken by the EuroQol Group, they are by no means comprehensive and may only represent one aspect of a multifaceted issue or topic,” said Andrew Lloyd, guest editor. “Furthermore, the topics covered examine issues that are certain to be dynamic. Healthcare and health technology assessment policy change, and the field of health measurement and valuation, continue to evolve alongside it. The importance of understanding the local and global direction of policy is recognized by the Group, and is at the heart of the mission of the collection of diverse internationally based scientists who are its members.”
