Value in Health Themed Section Offers Updated Global Perspective

ISPOR—the professional society for health economics and outcomes research, announced today the publication of a series of papers that reflect the current research focus and interests of the EuroQol Group. The themed section, “The Evolution of the EuroQol Group,” was published in the January issue of
Value in Health.
The section guest editor, Andrew Lloyd, DPhil, Acaster Lloyd Consulting, Ltd, London, UK, curated this collection of papers and wrote an
introductory editorial that puts this series of articles in context. Each of the articles in the themed section addresses one or more aspects of EQ-5D, a standardized instrument for measuring health status first introduced in 1990 by the EuroQol Group. The themed section includes the following articles:

- Selecting Bolt-On Dimensions for the EQ-5D: Examining Their Contribution to Health-Related Quality of Life, by Aureliano Finch, John E. Brazier, and Clara Mukuria
- Future Directions in Valuing Benefits for Estimating QALYs: Is Time Up for the EQ-5D? by John E. Brazier, Donna Rowen, Andrew Lloyd, and Milad Karimi
As the papers in this themed section reveal, striking a balance between innovative methods and providing a standardized approach to health valuation is a constant challenge. Standardized formats can facilitate data collection and ensure data quality, all in an effort toward better practices in health valuation around the world, particularly by researchers in countries with limited experience in the field.
“While these papers represent a snapshot of some of the current initiatives undertaken by the EuroQol Group, they are by no means comprehensive and may only represent one aspect of a multifaceted issue or topic,” said Andrew Lloyd, guest editor. “Furthermore, the topics covered examine issues that are certain to be dynamic. Healthcare and health technology assessment policy change, and the field of health measurement and valuation, continue to evolve alongside it. The importance of understanding the local and global direction of policy is recognized by the Group, and is at the heart of the mission of the collection of diverse internationally based scientists who are its members.”

ABOUT THE EUROQOL GROUP
The EuroQol Group is a global organization comprising almost 100 scientific members from 30 different countries. Although the Group established much of its research around the generic measurement and valuation of health, the scope of research activities conducted by the Group has continued to progress with the field. With the expansion of the original EQ-5D health self-classifier from 3 levels to a new classifier with 5 levels, the Group invested in a body of research designed to improve methods of valuation. Currently, the Group is starting a series of valuation studies for the Youth version of EQ-5D, using a standardized protocol.
