DESCRIPTION

Pharmacoeconomic modeling is widely used in health technology assessment and the value demonstration of new technologies as it provides a quantitative framework for the synthesis of evidence from a variety of sources to estimate expected costs and benefits. As these models support decision making regarding the cost-effectiveness and value of such technologies, it is important that they are transparent and of ‘good’ quality.

The aim of this course is to explain and demonstrate the steps that are involved in assessing the quality pharmacoeconomic models, including technical checks regarding the ‘wiring’ of the model, the assessment of the analytical techniques used to generate model inputs and outputs, and the importance of strategic review and assessment. The widely used ‘Drummond’ and ‘Philips’ checklists will be discussed, and the ISPOR Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS) reporting standards for economic models will be presented. Participants who wish to gain hands-on experience must have Microsoft Excel for Windows installed on their computers.
