OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of telemedicine in improving access to healthcare services, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, and Grey Literature databases. Out of 430 identified studies, 39 were selected for data extraction post-screening. The extraction focused on the utilization of telehealth technologies, applications, and methodologies. The studies included a diverse range of stakeholders such as the general population, patients, healthcare providers, epidemiologists, and public authorities.
RESULTS: The results indicated that telehealth services were advantageous for various stakeholders during the pandemic. Telehealth enhanced care coordination, communication among healthcare workers, and reporting and supervision. Many studies indicated that telehealth served as a remote support system for patients, facilitating communication and fostering relationships with healthcare providers over time. However, the experiences with telehealth services were varied, and there were apprehensions about potential staff reductions. Some studies also focused on challenges including technological barriers and difficulties in using telehealth due to illness or physical limitations
CONCLUSIONS: Telehealth has demonstrated its utility in managing the pandemic, suggesting its potential for broader application in healthcare. However, a careful evaluation of its challenges is essential to ensure its effective implementation and acceptance.
